Danceworks
began as an abstract idea in fall of 1991 seeing a lack of exposure to
the art of dance in the Plainfield area through quality dance education. The studio
became a reality when it opened for classes in July 1992, offering all forms of dance
for ages three to adult. Throughout the past 19 years it has become well rounded
in the curriculum offered. Classes are geared for both the recreational dancer and
the more serious dancers, this comprehensive atmosphere insures something for
everyone. The first annual concert carried the appropriate name "Opening Night".
This past year Body Language was our nineteenth concert in a history of successful
productions. These annual events provide students of Danceworks the opportunity to
experience a professional quality production and to share the results of their dance
education with family and friends. Knowing that experience and exposure to the
opportunities of performance is key to the development of a dancer's training, we offer
many such opportunities for our students by performing at many local and community
events. The Repertory Company, a performing and competition team, was established in
1995 with this in mind. Collaborative efforts of Danceworks include choreography
for several local theater groups including the Norwich Arts Council and The Theater
of Northeastern Connecticut at The Bradley Playhouse. The annual PIMA pageant
for the town of Plainfield has become an established tradition in their spring schedule, as well as choreographing the
PHS spring musical. Other endeavors include the performance of liturgical dances at the annual World Day of Peace
and Christian Unity, services at the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Danielson, World Day of Prayer and Plainfield
Ecumenical Celebrations.
Our Mission
Danceworks Dance Centre's mission is to provide excellent dance education in a family oriented
environment. We offer a variety of dance techniques for beginning through advanced dancers, for the
recreational to the more serious dancer, there is something for everyone. We strive to set a high standard
of quality teaching to all ages with an emphasis on the artistry of movement. Our philosophy is that it is
much more than just dance. Intangibles such as self confidence, team work, and discipline, are qualities
students will benefit from in all areas of their lives.
The Repertory Company
The Danceworks Repertory Company was established in 1995
with the idea in mind that performance opportunities are essential
to a dancer's training. The Repertory Company is a group of dedicated
and talented students who attend 6 to 8 hours of dance classes a week.
Student selection is based on their interest and background in all forms
of dance, good attitude, and a strong commitment to extra work and
rehearsals. Weekly Repertory classes cover stage presence, choreography,
travel procedures, performance techniques and touring etiquette.
The Danceworks Repertory Company performs at area functions and attends
3 to 4 regional dance competitions and 1 national competition yearly.
The group has competed all over Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island,
Maine, and New Jersey receiving many platinum, gold, and silver awards along
with numerous judges awards for choreography and stage presence.
